How can communities be better equipped to prevent violent extremism? Drawing on lessons from the Peace Beyond Borders project in Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), this report examines how locally led prevention, cross-border cooperation and stronger relationships between communities and institutions can help address the conditions that make people vulnerable to recruitment by violent extremist groups.

Developed by the Kofi Annan Foundation, Pole Institute and Prospect Initiative, the report presents nine practical recommendations for policymakers, civil society organisations, security actors and development partners. It explores how to strengthen local prevention efforts, build trust, address socioeconomic vulnerabilities, support victims of violent extremism and ensure that communities play an active role in shaping sustainable peace and security responses.

Discover the key lessons from the project, real-world examples of community-led action, and actionable steps to inform more inclusive and effective approaches to preventing violent extremism.
