Accountability Hubs

Supporting young leaders working to strengthen accountability and democratic governance

Young people are often excluded from decision-making despite having the greatest stake in the future of their societies. Accountability Hubs supports emerging leaders with the skills, networks and resources they need to strengthen accountability, transparency and democratic governance in their communities.

Inspired by Kofi Annan’s belief that young people should be at the forefront of change and innovation, the programme brings together young leaders committed to promoting accountable leadership, citizen participation and democratic renewal.

Since 2023, Accountability Hubs has supported young leaders across Africa and Europe through training, mentoring, peer learning and practical project development. Participants gain expertise in democratic governance, ethical leadership, financial and political accountability, advocacy and project management, while building lasting networks with fellow changemakers.

The initiative began with the WYDE Accountability Hubs programme in Sub-Saharan Africa (2023–2026), implemented by the Kofi Annan Foundation in partnership with the Westminster Foundation for Democracy and The Oslo Center.

In 2026, the Foundation launched Accountability Hubs Europe, adapting and expanding the model for a new generation of young leaders working to strengthen democratic accountability across Europe.

Together, these programmes demonstrate the power of investing in young leaders to build more accountable, inclusive and resilient democracies.

“Any society that does not succeed in tapping into the energy and creativity of its youth will be left behind.”
