Statement | Almass Elman: A statement from Extremely Together
Yesterday we received the devastating news that Almaas Elman, sister to our Extremely Together Young Leader Ilwad Elman, was killed by a bullet in her car while being driven to the airport in Mogadishu, Somalia. We are devastated to the very core at this tragic event. Devastated for the world’s youth that has lost yet another activist engaged in overcoming divisions, violence and hatred. Devastated for Somalia, a country that has had to endure so much and that can ill afford to lose another young life that embodied the country’s hope and future. And lastly, devastated for Almaas’ family, who,…

Challenging the conventional: can post-violence reconciliation succeed?
Today, reconciliation is part of almost any peace agreement. However, there is a lack of understanding of what works in advancing reconciliation. With the support of the Government of Finland and the Robert Bosch Stiftung, the Kofi Annan Foundation has partnered with Interpeace to examine past reconciliation efforts and understand what reconciliation means for those living in countries affected by violence. Based on four studies in Guatemala, Northern Ireland, DRC and South Africa and experts’ inputs, the report: “Challenging the conventional: Making post-violence reconciliation succeed” proposes several critical questions that must be accounted for by national/international actors engaged in reconciliation…

Africa has been through a series of momentous changes. First came decolonisation. Then came a second wave, too often marked by tyranny and economic stagnation.
