Geneva, 24 February 2012

Mr Annan confirms that he has accepted a joint request from the United Nations Secretary-General, Mr. Ban Ki-moon, and the Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, Mr. Nabil ElAraby, to serve as Joint Special Envoy of the United Nations and the League of Arab States on the Syrian Crisis.

Speaking from Geneva, Mr Annan said: “I am honoured to accept the role of Joint Special Envoy on the Syrian crisis, and am humbled by the trust and confidence that has been placed in me.   I look forward to having the full cooperation of all relevant parties and stakeholders in support of this united and determined effort by the United Nations and the Arab League to help bring an end to the violence and human rights abuses, and promote a peaceful solution to the Syrian crisis.

M. Annan confirme qu’il a accepté la demande du Secrétaire général de l’Organisation des Nations Unies, M. Ban Ki-moon, et du Secrétaire général de la Ligue des Etats arabes, M. Nabil Elaraby, de servir en tant qu’ Envoyé spécial conjoint de l’Organisation des Nations Unies et de la Ligue des États arabes pour la crise syrienne.

S’exprimant depuis Genève, M. Annan a déclaré: “Je suis honoré d’accepter le rôle d’Envoyé spécial conjoint pour la crise syrienne, et de la confiance qui a été placée en moi. Je compte sur la pleine coopération de tous les acteurs concernés et toutes les parties prenantes et sur leur soutien à cet effort déterminé et conjoint des Nations Unies et de la Ligue arabe pour  contribuer à mettre fin à la violence et aux violations des droits de l’homme, et pour promouvoir une solution pacifique à la crise syrienne”.
