Kofi Annan and Martti Ahtisaari to visit Thailand to support and encourage reconciliation [English – Thai]
Nobel Peace Prize Laureates Kofi Annan, former United Nations Secretary-General and Martti Ahtisaari, former President of Finland, will visit Thailand from 16 to 19 February at the invitation of the Truth for Reconciliation Commission of Thailand (TRCT).
Their visit aims to support and encourage the ongoing reconciliation efforts in Thailand by sharing experiences of reconciliation initiatives with the TRCT as well as a wide range of actors involved in the reconciliation process.
Speaking before his departure, Mr. Annan stated that “We are visiting as friends of the people of Thailand. We shall listen, learn and share our experiences of reconciliation, which we hope will be of value to the TRCT as it moves forward with its work.”
Mr. Ahtisaari added that “Although no two reconciliation processes are the same, there are issues and challenges that are common to all countries. We hope that our discussions will help Thais to determine their own path towards reconciliation.”

นายโคฟี่ อันนัน อดีตเลขาธิการสหประชาชาติและนายมาร์ตติ อาห์ติซาริ อดีตประธานาธิบดีแห่งสาธาณรัฐฟินแลนด์ ซึ่งทั้งสองคนเป็นผู้ที่เคยได้รับรางวัลโนเบลสาขาสันติภาพ จะมาเยือนประเทศไทย ระหว่าง 16 -19 กุมภาพันธ์ ตามคำเชิญของคณะกรรมการอิสระตรวจสอบและค้นหาความจริงเพื่อการปรองดองแห่งชาติ (คอป.)
การมาเยือนประเทศไทยในครั้งนี้ มีจุดประสงค์เพื่อสนับสนุนและส่งเสริมการปรองดองที่มีอยู่ในประเทศไทย โดยการนำประสบการณ์ในการทำงานด้านการปรองดองในที่อื่นๆ มาแบ่งปันให้กับ คอป. และผู้ที่มีบทบาทเกี่ยวข้องกับกระบวนการปรองดองในวงกว้าง
ก่อนออกเดินทางมายังประเทศไทย นายอันนันได้กล่าวเกี่ยวกับการมาเยือนในครั้งนี้ว่า “เรามาเยือนในฐานะเพื่อนของประชาชนชาวไทย ซึ่งเราจะรับฟัง เรียนรู้ และแบ่งปันประสบการณ์ของเราในเรื่องการปรองดอง โดยเราหวังเป็นอย่างยิ่งว่าจะเป็นประโยชน์และมีคุณค่าสำหรับการทำงาน คอป. ในก้าวต่อๆ ไป”
นายมาร์ตติ อาห์ติซาริกล่าวเสริมว่า “แม้กระบวนการปรองดองในแต่ละที่จะมีความแตกต่างกัน เพราะไม่มีกระบวนการปรองดองของที่ๆ หนึ่งจะไปเหมือนกับของอีกที่ได้ แต่ทุกๆ ประเทศต่างก็มีประเด็นและสิ่งท้าทายเหมือนกัน เราจึงหวังว่าการที่เรามาร่วมหารือเรื่องการปรองดอง จะมีส่วนช่วยสนับสนุนให้ประชาชนชาวไทยสามารถกำหนดทิศทางสู่การปรองดองของพวกเขาเองได้”
Kofi Annan served two terms, from 1997 to 2006, as UN Secretary-General. In 2001, Annan and the United Nations were jointly awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace. Since leaving the United Nations, Kofi Annan has established a Foundation which aims to promote better global governance and strengthen the capacities of people and countries to achieve a fairer and more secure world. To advance this mission, the Foundation has developed programmes and partnerships in three main focus areas: (i) Peace and Security; (ii) Sustainable Development; and (iii) Human Rights and the Rule of Law.

After a distinguished career with the United Nations and the Finnish Foreign Ministry, Martti Ahtisaari was elected as President of the Republic of Finland in 1994. He held the position until the end of February 2000. In December 2008, Mr. Ahtisaari was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.
Since leaving the office of President of the Republic of Finland, Mr. Ahtisaari has undertaken several international tasks to continue his career in international peace mediation and conflict resolution. After leaving the office of the President, Martti Ahtisaari founded CMI (Crisis Management Initiative), a non-governmental organisation, to continue his legacy in helping the international community to do better when it comes to preventive diplomacy, peacemaking and conflict resolution. Today President Ahtisaari acts as the Chairman of the Board of CMI.
President Ahtisaari is active in numerous other non-governmental and non-profit organisations.

หลังจากที่ได้สร้างผลงานอันโดดเด่นจากการทำงานในสหประชาชาติและกระทรวงการต่างประเทศของฟินแลนด์แล้ว นายมาร์ตติ อาห์ติซาริได้รับเลือกให้เป็นประธานาธิบดีแห่งสาธารณรัฐฟินแลนด์ ใน พ.ศ. 2537 และดำรงตำแหน่งประธานาธิบดีจนถึง พ.ศ. 2543 ต่อมาในเดือนธันวาคม พ.ศ. 2551 นายมาร์ตติ อาห์ติซาริจึงได้รับรางวัลโนเบลสาขาสันติภาพ
