West Africa has a Drug Problem

Dakar, Senegal – The West Africa Commission on Drugs, convened by the Kofi Annan Foundation in 2013 to address the growing threat of drug trafficking and consumption in the region, will today present its final report: Not Just in Transit: Drugs, the State and Society in West Africa,at an event in Dakar, Senegal. This video shows the scope of the problem facing the region, and includes suggestions for how governments can begin to address the growing threat of trafficking and consumption of illicit drugs.

Drug trafficking and consumption undermine institutions, threaten public health and damage development efforts. However, Kofi Annan believes “that drugs have destroyed many lives, but wrong government policies have destroyed many more”. He speaks out on drug policy reform globally as an advocate for a science- and health-centred approach.
