Empowering Young African Leaders: WYDE Accountability Hubs Convene in Tanzania
The Kofi Annan Foundation recently brought together ten young leaders from across Sub-Saharan Africa for an inspiring learning and networking event in Tanzania. As part of the WYDE Accountability Hubs, these leaders engaged in high-level discussions, capacity-building workshops, and collaborative brainstorming sessions aimed at strengthening accountable and transparent governance across the continent.

Engaging with Key Stakeholders
The young African leaders had the privilege of meeting with key figures shaping governance and development in Africa.
- H.E. Jakaya Kikwete, former President of Tanzania, shared invaluable insights on leadership, accountability, and governance. His wisdom and experience provided the young leaders with inspiration and guidance as they work to build a more transparent and inclusive Africa.
- Marc Stalmans, Head of Cooperation at the EU Delegation to Tanzania, and Chiara Guidetti, focal point for Human Rights and Democracy, engaged in extensive discussions on the Africa-EU relationship. Topics ranged from trade and investment to democracy and human rights, emphasizing the need to support young people and civil society organizations (CSOs) driving change.
- Patricia N. Laverley, Country Manager of the African Development Bank Group’s Tanzania Office, led a discussion on sustainable development, youth participation in the labor market, and entrepreneurship. The dialogue underscored the vital role of Africa’s youth in economic growth and the links between good governance, transparency, and effective investment.

Strengthening Networks and Collaboration
As part of the event, WYDE Accountability Hubs leaders participated in an energizing networking session with ALDA grantees, where 23 young African leaders from 13 countries exchanged innovative ideas on promoting accountable leadership.
Additionally, they met with leading Tanzanian civil society organisations, who shared advice and best practices, including:
- Global Platform Action Aid
- Tanzania Youth Coalition
- Open Youth Opportunities
- Reach Out Tanzania
- Tanzania Bora Initiative
- Jamii Forums
- Legal and Human Rights Center

Building Capacity Through Expert-Led Training
Several partner organizations provided specialized training sessions to equip young leaders with practical skills:

- Westminster Foundation for Democracy (WFD) led a session on Financial Accountability, focusing on parliamentary scrutiny and financial transparency—critical for building trust in democratic institutions.
- The Oslo Center shared expertise on Political Accountability, emphasizing the role of youth in ensuring democratic systems remain responsive to citizens’ needs.

Inspiring Leadership and Commitment to Change
The event was honored by the presence of EU Ambassador Christine Grau and Shabnam Mallick, Head of the UN Resident Coordinator’s Office, both of whom shared encouraging words with the young leaders.
With new knowledge, strengthened networks, and a shared commitment to governance reform, the WYDE Accountability Hubs members are now preparing to launch innovative pilot projects in their respective countries.
