The winners of the 2025 Kofi Annan Road Safety Award

Congratulations to the 2025 Kofi Annan Road Safety Award winners! The awardees—Nigeria, Kenya, Senegal, Ethiopia, Cameroon, and South Africa—have shown that change is possible when leadership, innovation, and a commitment to human dignity come together.

As Jean Todt reminded us in his opening statement: “Kofi Annan was a visionary leader who understood that road safety is not only a technical issue: it is a moral imperative, a matter of social justice, and a fundamental right.”

From pioneering policies to cutting-edge technologies, this year’s winners are saving lives and setting the pace for road safety reform across the African continent.

Celebrating remarkable efforts to reduce road traffic fatalities

With the primary objective of motivating key stakeholders to develop and implement innovative and outstanding ideas and initiatives to save lives on Africa’s roads, the third edition of the Kofi Annan Road Safety Award was hosted in Ezulwini, Eswatini, on 14 – 15 April 2025.

“…road safety is, above all, about human rights. It means protecting the lives and livelihoods of the people of Africa, creating a safer, more equitable future for all.”

Africa loses hundreds of lives every day to road crashes—but change is happening. The Kofi Annan Road Safety Award celebrates remarkable efforts to reduce road traffic fatalities and injuries across the continent.

The two-day event featured a technical workshop and powerful opening remarks by UN Special Envoy Jean Todt, alongside contributions from UNECA’s Antonio Pedro, UN Resident Coordinator George Wachira, and Chief Ndlaluhlaza Ndwandwe of Eswatini.
