MEDIA ADVISORY: Colloquium on the Enhancement of Democracy and Good Governance in West Africa

Dakar, 02 Sept 2022. The United Nations Office for West Africa and the Sahel (UNOWAS), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the Open Society Foundation (OSIWA), the Kofi Annan Foundation (KAF), and the National Democratic Institute (NDI), organize, in Dakar, a colloquium on the enhancement of democracy and good governance in West Africa.

In the context of the resurgence of Coups d’états in West Africa, the colloquium intends to assess the implementation of key existing normative frameworks sustaining democratic governance in the region. These frameworks include the 2001 ECOWAS Supplementary Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance, the subregion’s most comprehensive democracy and good governance instrument, which lays the foundation of a democratic sub-region and contributes to achieving sustainable peace and development, as well as the 2007 African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance, the main normative instrument which sets standards for better governance across the continent.

The colloquium will bring together approximately 35 participants, including governance and peacebuilding experts and practitioners, representatives of think tanks/research organizations, independent legal institutions, academics, women, and youth. It will provide a platform for in-depth analysis and recommendations that contribute to a more informed and context-adapted revision of the ECOWAS Supplementary Protocol on Governance. it will also analyze the potential linkages and impact of terrorism on political stability in West Africa and formulate some concrete recommendations as to how to face this challenge in the region.
