Building a common understanding -through open dialogue, research and exchanges of good practices from all continents- of how democratic, ethical and inclusive leadership is essential to solving global challenges.
The Challenge
Our multilateral system is proving increasingly unable to deliver the transborder, multi-sectoral interventions needed to address the complex and interconnected challenges we face. At the same time, Democracies who have traditionally been the main driving force in the crafting of the international legal norms upon which the current multilateral system is built – are in retreat. Democracy and effective multilateralism are inextricably linked, and the Kofi Annan Foundation aims to catalyze discussions in and around multilateral fora on the role of democracy and its link to the effectiveness of multilateralism in responding to global challenges.
“I remain a committed believer in the value of democracy as a catalyst for better governance, greater security, and human development. The spread of democracy has been one of the most profound and positive developments that I have witnessed over my career.”
Kofi Annan

About the project
The Multilateralism and Democracy project has three pillars: Research and Exchange, Education and Advocacy. We will convene expert discussions and produce policy papers on democratic principles, processes and practices in responding to emerging global challenges. The Foundation and partners will train aspiring young leaders from around the world on democratic leadership and multilateralism, and advocacy activities will enhance public discourse on democracy and multilateralism, and inspire citizens to engage in civic activism, democratic leadership, and international cooperation
“Democratic, ethical and inclusive leadership is essential to solving global challenges.”
Objectives
- An increase in evidence-based understanding of the links between multilateralism and democracy and of how strong accountability mechanisms and public trust at national level can increase the effectiveness of action at global level.
- A global community of aspiring young political leaders who have a deepened understanding of ethical and democratic leadership standards; increased awareness of the complex challenges that leaders face today; and strengthened skills and networks to respond to such challenges, including through the multilateral system.
- Heightened public interest in the question of the interaction between democracy and multilateralism, and the need to take effective, joint action to respond to the retreat of democracy and multilateralism
