2019 Oxford Peace Talks to be held in honour of Kofi Annan

Oxford Peace TalksThis year, as part of the 2019 Oxford Africa Conference, Peace Talks will travel to the University of Oxford on the 16th of May 2019 for the Oxford Peace Talks in honour of Kofi Annan. Peace Talks is a global initiative built on the idea that everyone can play a role in establishing peace.

Organised under the theme: ‘Africa Leading for Peace,’ the event is in honour of our founding chairman and 7th Secretary-General of the United Nations, Kofi Annan. Mr Annan was a speaker at previous Peace Talks and, in 2018, visited the University to formally open the Bonovaro Institute of Human Rights.

The Oxford Peace Talks Format

Through a series of 8-minute talks, young Africans will share their personal stories and experiences, to highlight their efforts to promote peace in Africa. The Oxford Peace Talks will also help shift the needle on the narrative of Africa being a continent in need to a continent of global relevance with best practices and models of peace.

About the event

Oxford Peace Talks in honour of Kofi Annan is open to the public and will be held at the Bonovero Institute of Human Rights at Mansfield College in Oxford from 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm GMT. One of the speakers is Extremely Together Young Leader Ilwad Elman from Somalia. Ilwad is the Director of Programs & Development for the Elman Peace and Human Rights Centre in Somalia.

Kofi Annan’s legacy is an illustration of the essence of the Peace Talks’ theme: his contribution to peace has truly transcended borders and has contributed to asserting Africa’s relevance globally.
