The Kofi Annan Foundation joins the European Partnership for Democracy network

We are delighted to join the European Partnership for Democracy (EPD) and excited to work with its members to reinforce the impact of European actions to promote and defend democracy worldwide.

These are trying times for supporters of democracy. Still, the Foundation and the EPD share the conviction that democracy is the system best suited to deliver human rights, human security, and development, and while it can appear chaotic, at its heart, democracy is far more resilient and more capable of delivering positive change, than any alternative.

We look forward to working with EPD members to address some of Kofi Annan’s priorities in the field of democracy, such as mitigating the impact of technology, increasing participation and inclusion of young people, and improving the integrity of electoral processes.

Our work for Democracy: Election support, voter rights, transparency and freedom of information

Our Electoral Integrity Initiative brings together leading experts and organisations in the field of democracy / electoral support to address political challenges that undermine elections in specific countries and identify thematic challenges to electoral integrity. Most recently, the Kofi Annan Commission on Elections and Democracy in the Digital Age put forward recommendations to governments, businesses and civil society to protect democracy from digital threats, including polarization, hate speech, disinformation, political advertising and foreign interference. We are now working to help implement these recommendations in various countries.

Working with partners, the Kofi Annan Foundation advises countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America on strengthening the integrity and legitimacy of their electoral processes and avoiding election-related violence.

About the European Partnership for Democracy

The European Partnership for Democracy (EPD) is a not-for-profit organisation with a global remit to support democracy that brings together a network of 19 organisations specialising in the different parts of a democratic system. The EPD is the only democracy support organisation of its kind, covering a wide variety of specialisations. The EPD works inside and outside of Europe because we recognise that democracy is a universal aspiration and that the contemporary challenges and opportunities for democracy are global in scope. Its mission is to contribute to and reinforce the impact of European endeavours in democracy assistance worldwide.
