JUNE 24, 2020: From the academic year 2020-21, Mansfield College will be partnering with the University of Oxford’s prestigious Weidenfeld-Hoffmann Scholarship and Leadership Programme to offer seven new, fully-funded ‘Kofi Annan scholarships of the Weidenfeld-Hoffmann graduate programme’ per academic year, for the next 5 years.

The aim of the Weidenfeld-Hoffmann Scholarship and Leadership Programme is to provide outstanding university graduates and professionals from developing and emerging economies with the opportunity to pursue study at the University of Oxford.

Many of the students will come from a variety of countries and backgrounds which mean that the scholarships can be particularly life changing: both for the Scholars themselves and in terms of the potential impact of their work after their studies are completed – one of the eligibility criteria for admission into the Programme is for Scholars to intend to return to their country of ordinary residence once their course is completed.

“Young people should be at the forefront of global change and innovation. Empowered, they can be key agents for development and peace. If, however, they are left on society’s margins, all of us will be impoverished. Let us ensure that all young people have every opportunity to participate fully in the lives of their societies.”

The seven Scholarships at Mansfield are a new partnership between the University of Oxford’s Weidenfeld-Hoffmann Scholarship and Leadership Programme and the College. The Kofi Annan Scholars of the Weidenfeld-Hoffmann Programme at Mansfield has been made possible thanks to the generosity of Mansfield alumnus, Mr Jan Fischer, of Germany.

The Kofi Annan Scholarship Programme at Mansfield College is announced at a time when global inequalities in society are deepening. We believe that universities can help address this issue, by helping people from a broad range of backgrounds to develop their talents and to make a positive contribution to the world.

“Education is a human right with immense power to transform. On its foundation rest the cornerstones of freedom, democracy and sustainable human development.”

We are extremely proud to collaborate with Mansfield College and be able to honour Mr. Annan’s legacy in the promotion of youth leadership with such a valuable institution. We are proud that, just as the Ford Foundation played a critical role in Mr. Annan’s life by granting him a fellowship  in 1958 to support his education at Macalester College, 35 young people will be able to benefit from such an exciting life opportunity thanks to this partnership.
