WEST AFRICA COMMISSION ON DRUGS TO VISIT GUINEA BISSAU

A delegation of the West Africa Commission on Drugs (WACD) is to visit Guinea Bissau next week (19-21 August) for a series of consultations.

Accra – A delegation of the West Africa Commission on Drugs (WACD) is to visit Guinea Bissau next week (19-21 August) for a series of consultations.

Over the course of their 3-day visit, the delegation will meet with the authorities, international and regional organisations as well as civil society groups to better understand the drugs situation in Guinea Bissau. The delegation will hold a press briefing on Tuesday, 20 August,at the Azalai Hotel, Bissau, at 6PM.

The three-person delegation will be led by former President Olusegun Obasanjo, the chairman of the WACD, and also include Christine Kafondo, a public health activist from Burkina Faso, and Dr. Alpha Diallo, a medical doctor and youth leader from Guinea.

Country visits like this one will contribute to the WACD’s understanding of the impact of drug trafficking and consumption in the region, and help it formulate its findings and recommendations which will be released in an authoritative report due out early next year.

Kofi Annan, former secretary-general of the United Nations and Nobel Prize laureate, launched the WACD in Accra in January 2013 in a bid to tackle drugs problems in West Africa and their impact on security, governance and public health.
