A time of opportunity for African agriculture

The new Africa Growth Report 2016 features an article by Dr. Tesfai Tecle, Senior Advisor for Food and Nutrition Security at the Kofi Annan Foundation, and Mr. Fabian Lange, Associate Research Officer at the Kofi Annan Foundation.

The article focuses on five fundamental areas where urgent action is needed to ensure that Africa can harness its full agricultural potential: farms and farmers, infrastructure, the policy framework, women and youth, and climate adaptation. Tecle and Lange argue that a shift from subsistence farming towards growing profitable businesses is critical to ensure future growth in Africa.

Africa is potentially an agricultural powerhouse. The continent has 60 percent of the world’s uncultivated arable land and could grow enough food to meet its own needs and export surpluses. Yet hundreds of millions go hungry. Despite recent progress, Africa’s farmers, most of whom are smallholders, underperform. The Kofi Annan Foundation advocates the transformation of African agriculture to ensure food and nutrition security for all by mobilising leadership and high-level commitment. We bring together leaders from the private sector, civil society and the political sphere to trigger cooperation that benefits farmers and the general population.
